Common Orthodontic Issues and At-Home Fixes
During your braces or Invisalign treatment, a few minor issues can occasionally pop up. The good news? Most of these issues aren’t true emergencies and can be managed at home until you’re able to visit our office. Our goal is to keep your smile journey smooth and stress-free. Here are some tips on how to fix common issues:
Loose or Poking Wires
If a wire is irritating your cheek or gums, orthodontic wax can offer quick relief. Simply roll a small piece of wax (provided at your first braces visit) and place it over the sharp or rough area. If the wire has come loose and you feel comfortable, you can gently tuck it back into place using clean tweezers or the eraser end of a pencil. Please avoid cutting the wire on your own.
Broken Brackets
If a bracket comes loose but is still attached to the wire, there’s no need to panic, as it’s usually not an urgent issue. You can use orthodontic wax to cover the bracket if it’s causing any irritation. In the meantime, avoid sticky, hard, or crunchy foods that could make the problem worse. Give our office a call so we can schedule a quick repair. If the bracket has completely come off, place it in a small bag and bring it with you to your appointment.
Sores Inside the Mouth
It’s not uncommon to experience small sores or irritation inside your cheeks, lips, or tongue when you’re adjusting to braces or aligners for the first time. While these spots can be uncomfortable, they’re typically temporary and not a cause for concern. Rinsing with warm salt water a few times a day can help soothe the area and promote healing. Orthodontic wax can also be applied to brackets or wires that may be causing friction.
Lost or Damaged Appliances
Aligners or retainers can sometimes go missing, get tossed by accident, or become cracked. If your aligners get lost or damaged, contact our office by phone or text as soon as possible so we can guide you on what to do next. If you still have your previous aligner, wear it to help keep your teeth from shifting. Please don’t try to repair a broken appliance yourself. We’ll work quickly to get you back on track with a replacement.
Consider joining our retainer assurance program to prevent lost or broken retainer headaches down the road!
General Soreness or Discomfort
It’s perfectly normal to feel some tenderness after getting your braces or following an adjustment. This discomfort usually fades within a few days. To ease the soreness, over-the-counter acetaminophen (like Tylenol) is a good choice, as other pain relievers may interfere with tooth movement. Cold treats like smoothies, yogurt, or ice cream can also offer soothing relief. If the pain feels sharp, lasts longer than expected, or just doesn’t feel right, give us a call.
